PROJECT OVERVIEW (adapted from bie.org) |
|
Name of Project: Design Industry Evolves
Grade Level: 9-12th Proficient
Duration of Project: 4-5 weeks
Teacher(s): Art teacher/CTE Graphic Design Teacher
Subject / Course: Art / CTE Graphic Design
PROJECT SUMMARY |
|
CTE Standards: D6.0 Produce a prototype of a product.D9.3 Create a packaging concept utilizing drawing computer software (graphic or CAD). D9.4 Produce a physical package with graphics for the product D7.3 Identify any redesigning or additional corrections required to improve the overall quality, look, and performance of the prototype model.
Success Skills: Idea development, Problem-Solving, 3D Prototype development
Tier 2/3 Words: Streamlines, Prototypes, Patent, Manufacturing, Typography, Ascenders, Descenders,
Project Summary: Students will analyze how 3D printing is transforming our world by reading various articles of how it is affecting the design industry among other areas in our life. Students will see the broad impact it has and will think about how they can create something using 3D printing as a tool. Students will learn how to use software compatible with 3D printing such as Tinkercad, Thingiverse, Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator in order to upload into the MakerbotPrint desktop software. Students will learn about the various forms of files and how to covert files in order to be able to print.
Driving Question: How can you use 3D printing to develop a design that is useful to the public in the design industry?
Entry Event: Teacher will show 3D printed products made by other students. Students will read aloud an informative text and highlight major ideas. Teacher will facilitate the understanding of the text by having students complete a graphic organizer that will organize the article information that is broken down in order for students to take notes and summarize the main points.
Major Product / Performance: 3D printed product/ design
Making Products Public: students will take a picture of their 3D printed work and upload it to share to the teacher who will share to the public

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES |
|
I can... raise awareness of the potential benefits of 3D printing technology in the creative process
I can... develop digital skills appropriate for employability in the creative industries
I can... work collaboratively with my classmates to problem-solve, ideate and produce 3D prototypes.
RATIONAL FOR THE ACTIVITY |
|
Why are you doing what you are doing? I am creating this class project to introduce the importance of 3D printing into the lives of students in order for them to realize the potential in 3D design and how it is already playing a part in our world.
Value of the activity: Students will be able to create their own designs and learn how to use technology to design the creative ideas and turn it into 3 dimensional work. Students will also be learning skills that are appropriate for employability in the creative industries.
