![]() Students learned that there are many different bridges that serve a particular purpose. Designs of bridges vary depending on the function of the bridge, the nature of the ground underneath, where the bridge is constructed and anchored, the material used to make it, and the money available to make it. Students then had time to research bridge types such as suspension bridges, beam bridges, arch bridges, tied arch bridge, and cantilever bridges. Students then sketched their bridges on their journals. Brilliant! Which fruits, vegetables and liquids can be used to activate the clock? Let's experiment! ![]() The fruits that we tried that worked were a lemon, green apple, strawberry, potato, red apple, and orange. The only one that did not work at first and the one we struggled with the most was the tangerine. Some of our findings were that sometimes it helped if we put the copper and zinc sideways and sometimes it helped if they were straight. Interesting! The LED Paper Circuit Card. Using copper paper strip, a circle battery, an led light, paper and colors with a bit of tape and some trial and error. Success! ![]() Tobacco-Use Prevention Education (TUPE) held classes at Bayside Community School where students gained awareness of the harmful substances. Student, Henry Hernandez, decided to draw an image to bring awareness by making stickers out of his custom made drawing that he created using the i-Pad. He then gave away his stickers to his peers in class. When students rescued a turtle that was found on an alley they were determined to find it a nice home. The students collaborated with each other and did some research. As they researched they found out lots of information about the turtle they found. First, the turtle they found is a red eared slider, a very popular pet turtle. It is a semiaquatic turtle and thus needs a basking platform to lay and rest in order to receive UV light and heat light. Since the aquarium they had did not have a basking platform they decided they would build one themselves because of the high cost of the basking platforms at pet stores that range from $44 and higher. Since the turtle measured about 6 inches it needed a very large basking area so the students bought an egg crate and zip ties for roughly $20. The basking platform even includes side walls, a roof and a ramp that submerges in the water and allows the turtle to climb on. When the students were done it was a total success. Their measurements were perfect and the basking platform fit snuggly between the aquarium edges. The tank is ready to be filled with fresh water.
Here are examples of stickers created with various media. Some were drawn with color pencils, ink, and others where digitally created with the I-pad and then they were outlines and cut using the Silhouette cutter.
