I had the privilege of attending the ASU + GSV Summit Conference.
This conference taught me so much about Artificial Intelligence and how to harness the power of AI in schools and classroom settings to increase productivity, both for teachers and students. One of the key things is to come up with safe practices to ensure students are using AI responsibly in the classroom in order to take advantage of all its capabilities and to improve education. Although, teachers believe there are many risks and challenges, I want to challenge them to include it into their classroom because students who know how to use AI will be at an advantage to those who do not know how to use it. So start drafting and publish a responsible AI policy. One thing to remember is that AI will not take your job but it will give it to someone who knows how to use AI. Now I want to summarize some of the key things I found inspiring, beneficial, and that impacted me the most as an educator. As teachers, we often have to dig into our own pockets to get the supplies we need for students. But, thanks to CEO Alix Guerrir, who created DonorsChoose, teachers can now feel empowered to request much-needed materials for their students and donors can choose who to help directly and know where their money is going. So if you are a teacher or a donor, head on over and help educators receive the much needed supplies in their classroom. Uwill is a leading student mental health and wellness solution that serves 2 million students at 300 + colleges across the country! It was founded in 2020 to assist campus counseling centers as they faced overwhelming student demand for mental health support. Uwill facilitates communication between therapists with students. 75% of students said it helped them to stay in school. I loved learning about this company because I know first hand how hard it is to receive an appointment with a therapist in a timely manner. Usually it takes 5-6 weeks, at least, to see a therapist but with Uwill it allows virtual care and access to resources in the community and wellness on campus. Additionally, it allows lower-income students who might not have access to therapy which should be for everyone. 61% of those who used the platform expressed they had not used therapy before. It holds the largest yoga association worldwide, connects with third-parties that only come through with them. Most importantly, the virtual care meets students to where they are at. Schools choose the specific components of the environment. We all know that burnout rates for teachers have skyrocketed so this is a great resource for teachers and faculty as well, not just students. Another company that impacted me was Orijin, because the company tackles challenges with technology in incarcerated areas. Since I work with Juvenile Court & Community Schools I know how hard it can be for students to have access to technology in the classroom. Orijin has partnered with Universities and offers online lectures and even virtual field-trips that would otherwise be impossible as an incarcerated individual. This allows individuals to be readily equipped with re-entering society with knowledge and opportunity. Orijin even offers OSHA training and job readiness skills. VR goggles, that provides learning opportunities that would otherwise not be possible such as using the microwave or going grocery shopping. Although these sound like simple tasks, they are things that people take for granted but for inmates their whole world can change. Not only this but the company also provides an opportunity for inmates to build their own content. The pandemic allowed for Covid Relief funds to be used for tablets for every resident in corrections. AI will now assist with short staff, human engagement interactions, and to make it more personalized for the learner. Magic School AI, which won AI Revolution in Action, created by Adeel Khan, who is a lifelong teacher and principal who created this AI platform that facilitates lesson planning. It's free! In addition, you will receive assistance from Reina and suggestions. In the lesson you can add resources but you can also have AI build the resources suggested. Teachers can easily adapt for students and can continuously customize anything. The annual Education Innovation Showcase celebrated K-12 system leaders advancing innovation and fostering meaningful change in their schools and communities. The winner this year was Making Waves: reimagining College Counseling with AI. "With the use of AI, thousands more students can be reached compared to an exclusive person-to-person model. The use of technology also helps free up time for counselors to provide more intensive person-to-person support." This resonated with me as a first-generation student who had no support when I enrolled to College, no guidance when it came to filing paperwork, FAFSA, or navigate the complexities of transferring out of state and many other questions I had to navigate on my own. This makes me happy knowing that it will be accessible to all and help with educational equity. Duolingo, created by CEO Luis Von Ahn, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award. Duolingo is a free, fun way to learn any language. Quizizz, created by Ankit Gupta facilitates test taking for teachers and students. It allows for accommodations for students with IEPs. Teachers can modify as needed, choosing less questions or adding more time and other things in order to make it easy to create those quizzes for students and ensure student needs are met. Teach FX, created by a math and English teacher, Jamie Poskin. Teach FX records audio of classroom and allows various forms of AI to provide teacher with feedback. For example, it detects when a teacher is asking open minded questions versus close minded questions, or when you're building on what the students say, it measures teacher's moments to help them teach better.
